The Maryland Performance Excellence Awards program is managed by the Maryland Performance Excellence Foundation, Inc. and is the state’s Baldrige-based education and recognition program whose mission is to advance performance excellence through education, assessment and feedback, leadership, sharing of best practices and recognition. Its vision is that Maryland will be home to the nation’s highest performing organizations, elevating the quality of life for all who live and work in the state.

The awards program identifies, recognizes, and spotlights role model organizations whose performance is worthy of emulation. More importantly, the award application process encourages organizations to learn and improve. Through conducting self-assessment, an essential step in preparing the award application, and by utilizing the written feedback report which all applicants receive, the awards process helps applicants improve the way they manage their organization.

The Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence is a management tool for high-performing organizations which provides a comprehensive approach to leadership; strategic planning; customer/market focus; measurement, analysis and knowledge management; workforce focus; and the management of processes—all with a goal for data-driven results. The criteria are adaptive and can be used by large and small organizations, manufacturers and service providers, health care and educational institutions, and private and public sector organizations.

Why use the Criteria? In short, using the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence to improve your organization makes good “business” sense.

This program is Maryland’s only state-wide Baldrige-based continuous improvement program. It is affiliated with the Baldrige National Quality Program and the Alliance for Performance Excellence. The program has 25 years of experience and an exceptional volunteer base of individuals and organizations—all leaders in the field of performance excellence.

A variety of learning opportunities are available including briefings for leadership, workshops, and training on Baldrige Excellence Framework.  For additional information, contact LaWanda Burwell, Board Chair of Directors of the Maryland Performance Excellence Foundation:, 410-294-2056.
